The E1’s plug looks crude by modern standards, but BMW had thought carefully about where to stow it – behind a hinged section of their traditional twin-kidney grille.

The E1 depended on a sodium–sulphur battery driving a motor mounted on the rear axle. The arrangement gave a maximum range of 155 miles – excellent for the time – and the battery could be fully recharged overnight from a domestic power supply. As a demonstration of the possible, it was very impressive, and BMW had made the car particularly attractive too, with a lightweight body made of aluminium and plastic. However, although a Mk2 model at the 1993 Frankfurt Motor Show took the project a stage further by combining the 45bhp electric motor with an 82bhp petrol engine (from the K1000 motorcycle), the project was dropped. Cost was a major reason; this was an expensive programme and BMW needed the money more urgently for other projects.
